ScienceOnline2012 interview with Michele Arduengo

Every year I ask some of the attendees of the ScienceOnline conferences to tell me (and my readers) more about themselves, their careers, current projects and their views on the use of the Web in science, science education or science communication. So now we continue with the participants of ScienceOnline2012. See all the interviews in this series here.

Today my guest is Michele Arduengo, Scientific Communications Specialist at Promega Corporation (blog, Twitter).

Welcome to A Blog Around The Clock. Would you, please, tell my readers a little bit more about yourself? Where are you coming from (both geographically and philosophically)? What is your background? Any scientific education? Tell us a little more about your career trajectory so far: interesting projects past and present?

I guess you can say that these days I eat my grits with lots of cheese. I was born and raised near Atlanta, GA, but now call southern Wisconsin home. I hold a PhD earned through the Biochemistry, Cell and Developmental Biology Program at Emory University in Atlanta, where I studied cell differentiation in C. elegans.

I had difficulty staying focused while I was a graduate student and was constantly doing things like taking adjunct teaching positions at local colleges, enrolling graduate level theology courses, trekking off on? watercolor painting workshops, and even participating in a lay chaplaincy program at Emory University Hospital. The chaplaincy program was an incredibly valuable experience, and it was in this program that for me science, medicine and ethics collided head first, and I began to get a broader view of what it means to be a scientist in the ?real world?. These experiences led me to participate in a high school ethics teaching program and eventually to team teach a seminar in science and religion for college students.

After finishing my PhD I took a tenure-track teaching position at Morningside College in Sioux City, IA. (I bucked the system and didn?t do a postdoc.) I loved teaching, and at Morningside I was able to broaden my knowledge of biology as the only molecular geneticist in a biology department that included a parasitologist, zoologist, paleobiologist, and an ecologist. The experience teaching in Sioux City was great; it was the perfect antidote to narrow PhD training, and I loved learning about prairie ecology, participating in frog and toad calling surveys and teaching introductory biology. However, I missed city life (particularly the food scene), so when the opportunity arose to move to Madison, WI, and work for Promega, I seized it.

What is taking up the most of your time and passion these days? What are your goals?

Most of my time and passion centers on being a mom. There are days when my goal is simply to get out the door in the morning and not forget to take my daughter to school. There are other days when my goals are loftier. At work I think about writing and the best way to communicate new science technologies to researchers. As a writer, I am always searching for ways to improve. I confess that I still do not know what I am going to be when I grow up, but someday I hope to craft the perfect sentence.

What aspect of science communication and/or particular use of the Web in science interests you the most?

I?m curious to see how the web can facilitate the development of communities across communities, particularly to see if science communities can interact meaningfully with non-science communities.

I am concerned that the ability to personalize news pages, subscribe to particular news feeds or blogs, actually makes it easier for people to become more isolated. People connect with others across the world, but the only those who share the same interests or views. Back when folks only had access to one or two newspapers and three network TV channels, they had to listen to what was offered. People had to interact with the people around or not interact at all. So, is all this social media fostering the formation of lots of little islands of like-minded people, or can social media and the web really be used to cross-fertilize, to form vibrant diverse communities that drive innovation and a better world?

How does (if it does) blogging figure in your work? How about social networks, e.g., Twitter, Google Plus and Facebook? Do you find all this online activity to be a net positive (or even a necessity) in what you do?

Promega Corporation went ?paperless? in 2009, discontinuing all of our print technical magazines (one of which I edited). We converted our print magazines into two online technical publications and began a corporate blog, Promega Connections. As one of the charter bloggers, I have been involved in the development of the philosophy that guides our blogging activities. We see Promega Connections as a place for scientists to come to read things that are interesting to them, whether it?s technical tips, summaries of peer-reviewed literature, career discussions or just fun stuff. We are not looking to measure return-on-investment; we are looking to build relationships with our readers. The writing I do for the blog is the favorite part of my job. Actually, I like it so much that I always feel a little guilty?like I?m not really doing work?when I?m researching and writing Promega Connections pieces.

To learn a little more about blogging and gain some experience that I could translate to my work at Promega, I started my own personal blog, Grits and Purls. Occasionally I write a little science there, but mostly I write about being a mom. These posts are usually recycled into columns for my hometown newspaper. So, when I do write about science, I?m bringing science to a new audience.

To understand something, I have to do it. So to get a feel for social media, I am also on Twitter, Facebook and was on Google+. Twitter is a great tool for following other bloggers and discovering new ones. It?s really how I keep up with other science writers. I use Twitter more than aggregators, RSS feeds or anything else. Facebook seems still to remain in the personal realm for me as a user, although our Promega Facebook page routinely gets technical and customer service questions posted to it. I was on Google+ for a while. Lots of people were there, but nobody was there who wasn?t also on Twitter, so I dropped it. Pinterest is intriguing; I?m interested to see what happens with it.

I am connecting with science writers I would have never met otherwise through social media. I like that, but I also think face-to-face contact is important. And, frankly nothing gets my attention these days like a hand-written note arriving via snail mail.

When and how did you first discover science blogs? What are some of your favourites? Have you discovered any cool science blogs by the participants at the Conference?

I started poking around the science blogosphere just as Promega Connections was becoming reality. I found ScienceBlogs.com (where I discovered Janet Stemwedel, Ed Yong, Travis Saunders and Peter Janiszewski) and ResearchBlogging.org; I followed the ?Pepsigate? controversy and then found other science blogging networks. I joined Twitter, and that is where I really began to engage with other science writers and bloggers, and it?s where I learned about science online.

This year, after registering for #scio12, I shamelessly copied Science Goddess? idea of blog visits based on the scio12 attendees list (I wasn?t as thorough as she was; I took the random visit approach). I discovered many wonderful writers this way. I particularly love the writings and musings of @leafwarbler on The Science Essayist. The ?I am Science? and ?This is what a scientist looks like? tweets and photo essays that have grown out of #scio12 have been absolutely fascinating.

What was the best aspect of ScienceOnline2012 for you? Any suggestions for next year? Is there anything that happened at this Conference ? a session, something someone said or did or wrote ? that will change the way you think about science communication, or something that you will take with you to your job, blog-reading and blog-writing?

I am having a blast with the Science Scribing that Perrin Ireland shared with the #scio12 this year. Not only did I use it for sessions at #scio12, but I have also used it in some literature reviews that I have posted on the Promega Connections blog. My advice?have even more Science Scribing next year.

I loved the scio12 conference and learned a lot. I found it easiest to talk to people and connect in the small group for the tour of the arboretum that I attended. I?m just not a person who will start a conversation with someone during a coffee break and feel at all ?normal? about it. It would be nice to be able to work a few more small-group activities/field trips into the meeting, where conversation might come more easily for those of us who will gladly speak in a formal setting, shout into cyberspace, but quickly duck and run for cover at an informal gathering.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Mobile technology appears to be increasing the public appetite for news but it's far from clear whether the news industry will profit from that, a study issued Monday concluded.

The Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, in its annual state of the news media report, found encouraging signs within the 27 percent of Americans who say they get news on their smartphones or tablets.

These consumers are likely to seek out traditional news sites or applications, strengthening their bond with old newspaper or television news organizations. People with tablets tend to read longer articles and spend more time with news sites than they do on phones or desktop computers, said Tom Rosenstiel, Project for Excellence in Journalism director.

Many people already make it a habit to check their tablets before going to bed to see what is going to be in a newspaper the next day, he said.

Unique visits to online news sites jumped 17 percent from 2010 to 2011, similar to the increase from the year before, the report said.

"The demand for conventional journalism endures and in some ways is even growing," Rosenstiel said. "There were many people that didn't predict that. The content is still coming from traditional news companies."

Yet technology companies, rather than news companies, are better set up to take advantage of online revenue opportunities. The report found that five companies ? Microsoft, Google, Facebook, AOL and Yahoo! ? generated 68 percent of digital ad revenue in 2011.

News companies are generally not as able to provide the specific consumer information that digital advertisers seek, and they certainly have not been as aggressive in this area as the technology companies, said media critic Jeff Jarvis, who writes the Buzzmachine.com blog.

Jarvis also criticizes news organizations for not being more creative with their websites and applications, and not encouraging users to link information.

"I fear the iPad is a siren call to news organizations, seducing them into thinking they can maintain their old models and old controls, not just maintain but regain them," he said.

For news organizations, "there's a lot of work that needs to be done," said Roger Fidler, program director at the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri. "But it needs to be done very quickly."

Rosenstiel noted the trend of technology companies working with news organizations on new ventures announced within the past year: Yahoo! reaching a deal to stream ABC News reports; YouTube launching original programming channels, including one operated by the news service Thomson Reuters; The Washington Post developing a news aggregator, Trove.com, available through Facebook.

The Associated Press has begun providing some of its election coverage to the popular tablet app Flipboard, entered into a partnership with WhoSay.com over use of celebrity photos and also worked with Twitter on release of Nevada Republican caucus results.

The PEJ report noted how social media is increasingly driving news, through people who pass along recommendations to read articles to their friends through Facebook and Twitter. Still, only 9 percent of adults say they follow such recommendations regularly, compared to 36 percent who say they go directly to a news organization's app.

Most media sectors saw audience growth in 2011, with the exception of newspapers, the report said. The television network news audience grew for the first time in a decade and local stations also saw news growth in the late evening and early morning, the PEJ said.

LONDON - Barcelona forward Lionel Messi wants to spend the rest of his career with the European champions, who he believes are one of the greatest club sides of all time.

"The truth is my idea has been to always stay in Barcelona and see out the rest of my career here," he told Sky Sports in an interview to be broadcast on Saturday.

"Like I always say, one doesn't know what can happen in the future but if it were up to me to decide, I would stay at Barcelona for the rest of my career."

The 24-year-old Messi added that he had never seen a team play better football than the present Barcelona side.

"I didn't see the other great teams that people say have existed throughout history," he was quoted as saying on the Sky Sports website (www.skysports.com).

"Mainly because of my age, I wasn't old enough to have seen the great teams that we are compared with.

"From what I have seen I think it (the current Barca side) is the best, but I can't really compare (older great teams) as I don't know enough about the others."

Messi also praised coach Pep Guardiola for Barcelona's success - they are bidding for a third Champions League title in four seasons - and for helping him score more goals.

"Since Guardiola's arrival, he has made the team play this way. When he arrived he made me play higher up, closer to the goal in order for me to score more goals which, until his arrival, I hadn't done on a regular basis.

"He made us prepare better in training and for games, making it seem that every game was a final.

"He prepares everything with his vision when the games are played and everything he does shows he is the best coach in the world."

Messi scored a Champions League record haul of five goals in one match when Barcelona beat Bayer Leverkusen 7-1 earlier this month to reach the quarter-finals where they face AC Milan.

His performance prompted Manchester United's Wayne Rooney to rate the Argentine as "the best ever" on his Twitter account and Messi said he was flattered by the praise.

"It was incredible for Rooney to say those things about me. But not just Rooney, many other players in the profession put things in respect of the game where I scored five goals.

Conservative White House hopeful Rick Santorum surged to two startling, come-from-behind wins in the Deep South, in a dramatic shakeup in the Republican presidential battle.

A Santorum sweep of Alabama and Mississippi is also a slap in the face for Romney, who months into the race, has failed to seal the deal and convince American voters that he is the strongest candidate against Democrat Obama.

"We did it again!" Santorum told ecstatic supporters in Lafayette, Louisiana, where he had gathered after campaigning heavily in Alabama and Mississippi.

Santorum said his grassroots campaign consisted of "ordinary folks doing extraordinary things -- sort of like America."

"We will compete everywhere," he said, as he ridiculed Romney's inability to win over voters in several states despite massively outspending his rivals on campaign advertising.

"The time is now for conservatives to pull together," Santorum said.

With about 90 percent of precincts reporting, Santorum was ahead in Alabama with 35 percent of the vote, former House speaker Newt Gingrich was second at 30 percent, while Romney was third at 29, according to CNN figures.

In neighboring Mississippi the race came down to the wire, with US media not calling the state until more than 95 percent of precincts had reported, with Santorum on 33 percent, Gingrich at 31 and Romney at 30.

Libertarian congressman Ron Paul of Texas finished a distant fourth in both states. The island state of Hawaii -- Obama's birthplace -- was also holding a caucus on Tuesday to choose the party's nominee.

All eyes are now on Gingrich, who is fighting to remain viable after winning just two out of the 26 contests held so far.

He faces mounting calls to quit and allow conservatives to coalesce around Santorum, but on Tuesday night, while he congratulated Santorum on a "great" double win he indicated he would fight all the way to the Republican convention in Tampa, Florida.

He also insisted that the narrative of Romney as the inevitable nominee "just collapsed."

"If you're the front-runner and you keep coming in third, you're not much of a frontrunner," he trumpeted.

Santorum's camp suggested Gingrich losses in his southern back yard would mean he'd be forced to drop out of the race.

"After tonight, it will be a two man race, Rick and Mitt, and we will clear the field and Rick has a good shot down the road," Santorum spokeswoman Allison Stewart told CNN earlier.

"Rick Santorum is the candidate in this race that is the contrast to Barack Obama. That's what people are beginning to recognize," Stewart added.

In a message posted on Twitter, Gingrich insisted "the fight continues! On to Missouri, Illinois and Louisiana."

Earlier, 45-year-old insurance executive Troy Wolkow, his wife Mary, 46, and his daughter Nicole, 19, all said they had opted for Gingrich.

"I think he's the best candidate. His knowledge, his grasp of the issues and he's somebody that inspires me. If he becomes president, I see him as the most capable of being a leader," Troy Wolkow said.

Roy Watkins, 65, chief executive at Cebert Pharmaceuticals, said he chose devout Catholic Santorum. "The values that he has represent me," he told AFP.

But it was Romney who argued that he alone had the heft to beat Obama.

"It's essential that we have in Washington a president who understands how the free economy works... how free people pursuing their own dreams make a stronger nation. I've had that experience," he told a rally.

Romney is already ahead in the all-important delegate count, having about 40 percent of the 1,144 needed to win the sweepstakes and be crowned the party's presidential nominee at its convention in Tampa in August.

But the Santorum campaign accused him of "fuzzy math."

"The reality is simple: the Romney math doesn't add up and he will have a very difficult time ever getting to a majority of the delegates," the Santorum campaign said in a memo, arguing "time is on our side."

Peyton?s next place of employment has eclipsed, for now, the Saints? bounty system as the NFL?s top story.? That could change once Commissioner Roger Goodell metes out discipline to those involved in the cash-for-crippling conspiracy.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Rams expect to learn the fate of defensive coordinator Gregg Williams this week.? Unless Goodell plans to hand out punishment in piecemeal fashion, this means that all of the other various sanctions on folks like Saints coach Sean Payton and G.M. Mickey Loomis and the Saints organization itself will come out this week, too.

As to Williams, we?ve heard that there?s support within the league for a lifetime ban.? There?s also concern that a banishment would not survive a legal challenge under the same antitrust laws on which the players relied a year ago today, after shutting down the union and wiping out the league?s multi-employer labor exemption.? In something closer to English, the NFL consists of 32 separate businesses, and if they band together and refuse to employ Gregg Williams, the NFL could be violated the antitrust laws.

That?s why the end result could be a lengthy suspension (one year or more), and a termination of employment by the Rams, for cause.? (Firing Williams for cause would cut off his right to pay.? His contract undoubtedly contains a provision mandating that any legal challenges be resolved via arbitration.? Arbitration conducted by the league office.)

Then, if no NFL team ever hires him again, he essentially has been banned for life, without being banned for life.

As one league source explained it to PFT recently, the only flaw in this approach is that one of Williams? friends in the coaching profession may hire him several years down the road, after this incident becomes a faded memory.? Thus, the only way to truly ban Williams for life may be to indeed ban him for life.

It?s unknown at this point whether the NFL will go that far.? Combining the three-year use of a bounty system in New Orleans with consistent and repeated lies to the NFL about the use of the bounty system with, quite possibly, further falsehoods about the use of bounty systems with prior teams, ending Williams? NFL career could be the best way to ensure that no one uses bounties again ? and that anyone caught breaking the rules in the future won?t deny it until backed into a corner with irrefutable proof.

The range of penalties for Payton and Loomis is far less clear.? We?re told that Goodell will be careful not to make the Saints non-competitive, even though there?s a belief in some circles that Loomis deserves as harsh a punishment as Williams.? As to Payton, a short suspension may be rendered meaningless, unless the league plans to monitor his whereabouts and communication habits around the clock.? For any suspension less than a year, he?ll be able at a minimum to work on game plans in which he?ll be involved after the suspension.

Israeli air strikes kill two Gaza gunmen, civilian

GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli air strikes killed two Palestinian militants and a civilian in the Gaza Strip on Monday in a fourth day of cross-border hostilities, medical sources said.

The latest attack brought the casualty toll to 21 Palestinians dead, most of them gunmen, and at least 74 wounded, most of them civilians, since the violence flared last Friday.

It follows a familiar pattern in which militants launch rocket attacks and Israel carries out air raids in the Hamas-controlled enclave. But the bloodshed has usually ended after a few days with an informal truce.

Gaza's Hamas leadership, whose own cadres have kept out of the fighting, said on Sunday that neighboring Egypt was working to stop the violence and consulting with other militants.

A Palestinian official close to the mediation told Reuters that Israel had agreed to a midnight ceasefire.

But Islamic Jihad - an Iranian-backed faction behind most of the rocket fire - had baulked, insisting that any truce include an undertaking by Israel not to target militant leaders in future air strikes.

Two chiefs of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) faction, accused by Israel of planning to attack it via Egypt's Sinai desert, were killed in such a strike on Friday. Israel signaled no end to these so-called "preventive targeting" operations.

"If the Qassam (rocket) fire ends, the Israel Defense Forces will not continue (strikes), but the Israel Defense Forces will continue thwarting any attempted terrorist attacks," military spokesman Brigadier-General Yoav Mordechai told Israel Radio.

He confirmed there had been contact with Egyptian mediators.

An Islamic Jihad gunman was killed on Monday while launching a rocket from south Gaza, the group said. Another died and three others were hurt when their motorized rickshaw was hit.

Hospital officials said a 15-year-old schoolboy was killed in a separate air strike on Monday, with the death toll since Friday rising to 18 gunmen and three civilians.

At least 74 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been wounded over the past three days. More than 30 were hurt on Monday in an air strike on the home of an Islamic Jihad commander in the northern Gaza Strip. Islamic Jihad said he "survived assassination" but it did not elaborate.

Palestinian attacks against Israel have disrupted normal life in the south of the country and forced many schools to close on Sunday and Monday. Alerts to residents of southern towns to take shelter from incoming rockets punctuated radio programs.

PAINFUL BLOW

Asked about the slain schoolboy, the Israeli military said it had no information about any air strikes in the area at the time. But it said the air force had struck repeatedly in Gaza overnight in response to more than 25 rocket launches.

Islamic Jihad and the PRC, armed groups largely independent of Hamas, have said they fired most of the scores of rockets launched at Israel since Friday.

Some experts in Gaza believe Hamas had provided some smaller groups with ammunition but avoided direct participation in the current fighting out of concern Israel would step up its attacks in the enclave.

Hamas is also keen to avoid any long-term military campaign as it struggles to adapt to political upheaval in Arab countries such as Egypt, which shares a border with Gaza, and in Syria, where the group has abandoned its traditional headquarters.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in a statement on Sunday it would take several more days until the violence ended and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would hit hard at militants who launched rockets at its towns.

Though serious, few in Israel expect the bloodshed to lead to a ground assault reminiscent of the 2008-2009 Gaza war in which some 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed.

"Israel is not keen to see an escalation, Israel is not keen to hurt innocents - Israel is absolutely opposed to this," said Interior Minister Eli Yishai told Israel's Army Radio.

"For now, it (fighting) is on this kind of scale. But if it will prove protracted, then without a doubt there will be a powerful, painful blow so that this will not continue."

The violence has raised international concern.

France called for "an instant return to calm and restraint in order to avoid an escalation which would risk once again harming civilians". Russia also urged an end to the fighting and said "the use of any violence from which the civilian population suffers is totally unacceptable".

Gaza, home to 1.7 million people, was under Israeli occupation from 1967 until 2005 and remains under blockade.

Islamist Hamas has controlled Gaza since 2007 and is fighting for an independent Palestinian state but has shunned the stalled peace process supervised by international powers and refuses to recognize the Jewish state.

Islamic Jihad is less influential than Hamas but shares the same ideology, which advocates Israel's ultimate destruction.

Israel steps up Gaza air strikes

Israeli air strikes have pounded Gaza for a second day, in the worst violence in the region for almost a year.

Palestinian sources said at least 15 militants had been killed in the two days of fighting.

Israeli says almost 100 rockets fired from Gaza have struck Israel since the exchange of fire began.

The US condemned the rocket attacks, calling them "cowardly", while the Arab League called the Israeli air strikes "a massacre".

The UN and the European Union have expressed concern and appealed for calm.

The latest flare-up began on Friday when an Israeli air strike on a car in Gaza City killed militant commander Zohair al-Qaisi, secretary general of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), and two of his associates.

Gaza militants quickly unleashed a barrage of rockets toward southern Israeli communities.

Palestinian doctors said Israeli air strikes on Saturday killed one person near the southern town of Rafah on the border with Egypt and two more in Khan Younis.

They said that at least 26 Palestinians had been wounded over the two days, five seriously.

Israeli officials said rocket attacks against Israel had injured four people. They said Israel's Iron Dome missile-interception system had taken out 28 rockets heading towards populated areas.

Schools in several southern Israeli communities will be closed on Sunday, affecting more than 200,000 students, Israeli media reported.

The Israeli army said it struck several targets inside Gaza including "a terrorist squad" planning to fire rockets.

It said the air strikes were "in direct response to the rocket fire at Israeli communities in southern Israel".

Defence Minister Ehud Barak said "the Israeli army will hit anyone planning to attack Israeli citizens".

'Dangerous escalation'

The increase is violence alarmed world powers trying to bring peace talks between Palestinians and Israelis back on track.

US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Washington condemned "in the strongest terms" the rocket fire from Gaza, saying the attacks had "dramatically and dangerously escalated".

"We call on those responsible to take immediate action to stop these cowardly acts," she said.

The Arab League issued a statement accusing Israel of carrying out a "massacre".

It called for a tough stance from the international community against the Jewish state.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the bloc was "following with concern the recent escalation of violence in Gaza and in the south of Israel".

"It is essential to avoid further escalation and I urge all sides to re-establish calm," she said.

UN spokesman Richard Miron called the situation in Gaza "very fragile and unsustainable".

"We deplore the fact that civilians are once again paying the price," he said.
