A closer look at the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (video)

The last time we showed you the Galaxy Note 10.1, we had time for a few hands-on shots, but not quite enough to get to know the tablet, to warm up to the idea of interacting with one of our favorite 10-inchers using a stylus pen. Now that we've had a chance to park ourselves at Samsung's Mobile World Congress and get acclimated to the various S Pen apps, we wanted to hit back with one more hands-on, this time focusing on what makes the Note 10.1 so special: the writing experience. Meet us past the break and we'll share some early impressions, along with a walk-through video. Only have a minute to spare? Consider those photos below your Cliff's Notes.

'Dark Shadows' Trailer: Where Is It, Tim Burton?

With just 77 days until the film's release, we're still waiting for even a taste of the campy Johnny Depp feature.
By John Mitchell

Today is February 24. Tim Burton's anticipated summer blockbuster adaptation of the vampire soap opera "Dark Shadows" is set to hit theaters on May 11. There are 77 days between now and the release of the film. And we still don't have a trailer — not even a teaser.

Special-effects-heavy blockbusters opening much later in the summer, including July's "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "The Dark Knight Rises," have already debuted multiple trailers to satisfy the bloodlust of fans hungry for just a taste of the movies they are counting down the days for. But we "Shadows" devotees have been kept waiting in the dark too long, not unlike Barnabas (Johnny Depp) locked up in a coffin and hidden away in the Collins family mausoleum.

But lo, what's that in the distance I hear? Buzz that consumer surveying of two potential trailers, a shorter teaser and longer full trailer, took place earlier this week. To be fair to all involved, by "buzz" we really mean "Internet gossip," but it's pretty much in line with what we've been able to pull together about the film from interviews with Burton and Helena Bonham Carter from late last year — namely that the director is injecting the film with an undercurrent of dark comedy.

The GIF warriors over at Oh No They Didn't got word on Tuesday from a variety of tipsters that testing on varied trailers was underway. And the buzz is ... good? We've long been hopeful that the film would be "vintage Burton." By that we mean dark, weird and kind of funny, and from what the ONTD tipsters are saying, that's exactly what we may be getting. At his best, the director was capable of a balancing act few others would dare attempt. He made us care about a very odd man who had scissors for hands, after all, and laugh at the strange and colorful suburban world around him.

Much of the comedy in the film appears to stem from Barnabas' trouble acclimating to the modern world (well, 1972) when he is aroused from his centuries-long slumber by Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley). According to tipster Ross2287, Depp's delivery is spot on when he hears a car for the first time and calls out, "Show yourself Satan!" Later, during a fight with Eva Green's evil witch Angelique, Depp earned laughs from the audience when he requested she "strategically place your wonderful lips upon my posterior and kiss it repeatedly."

More choice one-liners arise when Barnabas is introduced to his descendants. Based on these accounts of the alleged in-the-works trailers, it's looking like the always lovable Chloe Moretz (who plays Caroline Collins) may well be a scene stealer. When Depp's Barnabas is introduced to her and finds out she is 15, he can't help but warn, "And no husband? You must put those birthing hips to good use at once lest your womb shrivel up and die."

Later, in what is said to be the full-length trailer, Depp sees television for the first time and is astounded, asking, "What sorcery is this?" before he rips the back panel off and yells, "Reveal yourself, tiny songstress!" Moretz then looks to her 200-year-old vampire cousin and says, "Are you stoned or something?"

Is any of this even true? Looks like we'll have to wait and see, though we decided to run with it because it's all we have. Do you hear that, Tim Burton? It's all we have. When it comes to this trailer, we can't help but repeat one of Depp's lines from the alleged mystery trailer: "Show yourself!"

Do you think the ONTD tipsters have it right? Is Tim Burton readying a dark comedy with his "Dark Shadows" adaptation? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @JohnMitchell83 with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!

New title by professor Robert Blair

As consumers we are increasingly disconnected from how our food is produced and supplied. New ideas and belief systems related to food are exploiting this disconnect and nowhere is this more true than organic food. In his new book, Organic Production and Food Quality: A Down to Earth Analysis Professor Robert Blair uses the latest scientific research to separate the truth from unproven beliefs.

'Organic Production and Food Quality' is the first comprehensive book on how organic production methods influence the standard of our foods, while comparing this to the perceptions of consumers and the demands of the global food industry.

Based on the latest scientific findings and the results of food monitoring programs in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand Blair explores issues consumers raise about organic food including quality, safety and "healthfulness" compared to conventional food.

"The internet is rife with unsubstantiated claims from the organic industry, and the media tends to have a negative impact on consumer perceptions about food," said Blair. "Thanks to food scares such as BSE or the controversy over GM foods more and more consumers began buying organic food. This resulted in a radical shift in food retailing, the expansion of the organic industry and the supply of organic foods at farmers' markets, supermarkets and specialty stores."

In contrast the recent announcement by the UK Food Standards Agency that organic foods are nutritionally similar to conventional foods may reverse consumer perceptions, as will the higher cost of organic food when budgets are tight. Blair agrees with the conclusions of the UK FSA, as does an important sector of the European organic industry.

With valuable recommendations for the production and marketing of conventional foods to meet consumer expectations 'Organic Production and Food Quality' is an invaluable resource for those working within the food industry. It also aims to arm anyone interested in the truth about organic food production with the latest, unbiased, scientific findings.

Reports: 2 Western journalists killed in Syria

Two Western journalists were killed Wednesday in the besieged Syrian city of Homs, according to reports.

Citing opposition activists, Reuters said one of the victims was American while the other was French. It was not immediately possible to confirm their identities.

A witness told Reuters by phone that shells hit the house where the journalists were staying and a rocket hit them as they were escaping.

Shells reportedly rained down on rebellious districts of Homs at a rate of 10 per minute at one point on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.

The Red Cross has called for a daily two-hour cease-fire so that it can deliver emergency aid to the wounded and sick.

Assad's crackdown on protests against his rule killed 5,400 people in 2011 alone, according to the United Nations. Hundreds more have been killed since, activist groups say. One activist group has put the current death toll at more than 7,300.

Homs is Syria's third-largest city.

Activists: Scores killed as Syria targets civilians

Earlier, an opposition activists' group said Syrian troops and militiamen loyal to President Bashar Assad chased, captured and then shot dead 27 young men in three northern villages.

The men, all civilians, were mostly shot in the head or chest on Tuesday in their homes or in streets in the villages of Idita, Iblin and Balshon in Idlib province near the border with Turkey, the Syrian Network for Human Rights said.

Several YouTube videos taken by local activists in Idlib, which could not be independently confirmed, showed bodies of young men with bullet wounds lying in streets and in houses.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration has opened the door slightly to international military assistance for Syria's armed opposition.

In coordinated messages, the White House and State Department said Tuesday they still hoped for a political solution.

But, faced with the daily onslaught by the Assad regime against Syrian civilians, officials dropped the administration's previous strident opposition to arming anti-regime forces. However, it remained unclear what, if any, role the U.S. might play in providing such aid.

"We don't want to take actions that would contribute to the further militarization of Syria because that could take the country down a dangerous path," White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters.

"But we don't rule out additional measures if the international community should wait too long and not take the kind of action that needs to be taken," he added.

NYT: US should help Syria rebels, McCain says

The administration had previously said flatly that more weapons were not the answer to the Syrian situation.

There had been no mention of "additional measures," despite daily reports from Syrian activists of dozens of deaths from government attacks.

At the State Department, spokeswoman Victoria Nuland used nearly identical language to describe the administration's evolving position.

"From our perspective, we don't believe that it makes sense to contribute now to the further militarization of Syria," she told reporters.

"What we don't want to see is the spiral of violence increase. That said, if we can't get Assad to yield to the pressure that we are all bringing to bear, we may have to consider additional measures," she added.

The Associated Press, Reuters and msnbc.com staff contributed to this report.

Historic Charleston Revisited | Back Road Journal

Historic Charleston, South Caroline With One Of Its Many Steeples

The southern town of Charleston, South Carolina is so lovely that it deserves multiple visits to really get to know all of its? hidden charms. That is exactly what my husband and I did on our road trip down to Florida and back. You may recall that we had stopped for one day ?in Charleston?but the lure of the picturesque city was calling us back as we headed north to our home in New England. Once again we stayed at the French Quarter Inn and were greeted with Champagne as we checked in.

French Inspired Bedroom

After unpacking and settling in to our French inspired ?bedroom,?we headed out to explore the city. The hotel is within walking distance of most everything that you want to visit and is right across from the restored markets.

Making Baskets For Over 70 Years

While walking through the market, I stopped and spoke with a woman who has made lovely sweetgrass baskets for over 70 years. The making of baskets has been handed down through her family from generation to generation. Her baskets are both beautiful and unusual.

Beautiful Handmade Sweetgrass baskets

Right outside the market you can find horse or mule draw carriages that will take you on a guided tour of the historic section of Charleston, stopping along the way to explain about the history of the beautiful homes and buildings from a century ago.

Carriage Ride Through Historic Charleston

It was a damp and gray day but Charleston is such a wonderful city for walking that we ?decided to take a stroll so that we might peak down alleys and through garden gates. We discovered small hidden gardens,

Hidden Garden

some public with statues or fountains, others were private and very intimate.

Peek Through the Wrought Iron Gate To Find Hidden Garden

Walking always builds up your appetite, so we headed back to the hotel to enjoy the free wine and cheese reception and meet some of the other guests staying at the hotel. ?Then it was upstairs to our room to change for dinner, a short walk away.

Tonight?s dinner reservation was at FIG. The initials stand for Food is Good and believe me it was. Chef Mike Lata was named Best Chef of the Southeast by the James Bread Foundation in 2010. The well known restaurant is renowned for its quality ingredients sourced from local farmers and growers. The restaurant feels like a combination of a neighborhood caf? and a little chic bistro.

Appetizers were classic yet served in a stylish and creative way. We started with a Wagyu beef carpaccio and chicken liver p?t?.

Beef Breast Carpaccio, Pecorino And Crispy Potato

Main courses were a delicious slow baked snapper with artichoke-cauliflower grenobloise ?and a suckling pig confit, with saut?ed greens, roasted beets and mustard jus.

Slow Baked Snapper With Yukon Puree, Artichoke And Cauliflower Grenobloise

The next day, we were off again to explore the city. Unfortunately it was another drizzly day, but that couldn?t stop us. Thankfully the rain stopped and even though we didn?t have beautiful sun, we enjoyed our day of discovery.

We had made a reservation at Husk for lunch. This is probably one of the most well known restaurants in town and it didn?t disappoint.

Husk Restaurant

Husk is noted for its farm to table meals. After walking in the front door you see a chalk board that has a list of ingredients used in the days cooking and the farms they came from.

Smoky Wings With Charred Onion BBQ Glaze

We ordered to items from their snacks section of the menu to start?grilled crostinis with pimento cheese and country ham and?SC smoky wings with charred onion BBQ glaze and Sea Island benne.

Vermillion Snapper With Carolina Gold Rice And Tomato Bacon Pole Beans

Lunch was SC shrimp and grits with braised peppers and onion and Surry sausage an a Vermillion snapper with Carolina gold rice and tomato bacon braised pole beans. We had to have two of their famous sides for the table?bacon cornbread and country ham braised greens. We would go back to Husk just for another helping of sides. They were the best we have ever had.

Our evening started with cocktails at The Gin Joint and should have ended there with some small plates. The Gin joint specializes in pre-Prohibition spirits. Their cocktails are made with the best quality ingredients and spirits. They are so particular about making the best cocktail that they juice their own fruit and make their own syrups. The many paged cocktail menu is full of slings, smashes, fizzes and fine small batch sipping spirits.

James Creates The Best Cocktail You Will Ever Have

A Proper Old Fashion And Fitzgerald FizzAfter sampling two of their delicious cocktails, I can see why they have been written up so often in both local and national magazines and papers.

I don?t like to criticize restaurants?that is up to local reviewers. I have decided to make an exception and say that my tip of the day is not to go to Amen Street restaurant. The she crab soup was like eating a bowl of bland thick gravy. A salad of marinated tomatoes, hearts of palm and gorgonzola was sent back because it was uneatable. Oysters on the half shell were fine but shucked in the kitchen instead of out front. This has been the only restaurant on our entire trip that we left without ordering a main course. I don?t think I need to say more.

As much fun as we have had on our two brief stays?we are already looking forward to our next trip to Charleston, South Carolina. The historic city, the delicious food and the warmth of the people will keep us coming back for many years to come.

Hi, I'm Karen. After living an active urban lifestyle, my husband and I moved to a 1730's home with an apple orchard in a small town in New Hampshire. We spend our summers at a small cottage on a lake in Maine. Spend a few minutes with me as I travel the back roads of New England and occasionally further. I'll share with you great food, interesting places and enjoyable pastimes that I find along the way.
