Italian seismologists face prison in quake

Six Italian scientists and one government official could see four-year prison terms for manslaughter for allegedly downplaying the risk of an earthquake in the town of L'Aquila, Italy, in 2009.

According to prosecutors, the six researchers and the Department of Civil Protection downplayed the likelihood that a series of tremors that hit the city in early 2009 were foreshadowing a larger quake. On April 6, 2009, a magnitude-6.3 earthquake killed 309 city residents.

The trial, which began about a year ago, has worried scientists, who point out that earthquake prediction is not possible. But prosecutors insist that the trial is not about predicting the unpredictable, according to Nature News. During closing arguments on Monday and Tuesday, the prosecution assistant told the courtroom that instead, the scientists and officials had inadequately assessed the risk of a quake and given deceptive information to the public. The prosecution is asking for four-year prison terms for the accused.

Earthquake swarms are notoriously unreliable predictors of future quakes, say seismologists. In 1988, researchers found that about half of large quakes in seismically active areas of Italy were preceded by foreshocks, but only 2 percent of small earthquake clusters predicted a big temblor.

At the controversial March 31 meeting in L'Aquila, earth scientist Enzo Boschi, now a defendant in the case, acknowledged the uncertainty, calling a large earthquake "unlikely," but saying that the possibility could not be excluded. In a post-meeting press conference, however, Department of Civil Protection official Bernardo De Bernardinis, also a defendant, told citizens there was "no danger."

Prosecutors have portrayed De Barnardinis as a victim of bad information from the team of seismologists, reported Nature News.

The trial is on hold until Oct. 9, when the defense will present its closing arguments.

Al Qaeda convicts flee in Iraq jailbreak

TIKRIT, Iraq (Reuters) - Dozens of prisoners, including convicted al Qaeda members, escaped an Iraqi jail after militants dressed in police uniform attacked the prison and released them, security sources said on Friday.

The jail, which housed some 300 inmates, was assaulted by gunmen driving police vehicles after a car bomb exploded outside the main gate late on Thursday, security sources said. Twelve prison guards and seven gunmen were killed in clashes.

Security forces managed to regain control of the jail, in the city of Tikrit, early on Friday, but an official said more than 50 prisoners were still on the run, among them leading members of al Qaeda who had been sentenced to death on more than ten counts.

"There was clear negligence and laxness by those who are in charge of this prison. The operation was pre-planned, well prepared," Hakim Al-Zamili, a member of parliament's security and defense committee, told Reuters.

A curfew was imposed and helicopters hovered over the city, the home town of the executed former President Saddam Hussein.

Around 20 escapees were recaptured overnight, but Zamili said it would be tough to track down the rest because they had destroyed prison records before fleeing.

"All documents, files, pictures and all identifications of those prisoners were burned. I think the security forces will find it very difficult to identify those who escaped."

Violence in Iraq has eased since its height in 2006-2007 when sectarian slaughter killed thousands. But Sunni Islamists and an al Qaeda affiliate still launch regular attacks, seeking to destabilize the country and undermine its Shi'ite-led government.

Prison breaks are not uncommon. Last September, 35 prisoners facing terrorism charges escaped via a sewage pipe from a temporary jail in the city of Mosul, an al Qaeda stronghold.

The Government Discovers There Are 386,000 More Jobs Than It ...

This morning the BLS released the preliminary annual benchmark revision showing an additional 386,000 payroll jobs as of March 2012. The final revision will be published next February when the January 2012 employment report is released on February 1, 2013. Usually the preliminary estimate is pretty close to the final benchmark estimate.

The annual revision is benchmarked to state tax records. From the BLS:

Establishment survey benchmarking is done on an annual basis to a population derived primarily from the administrative file of employees covered by unemployment insurance (UI). The time required to complete the revision process?from the full collection of the UI population data to publication of the revised industry estimates?is about 10 months. The benchmark adjustment procedure replaces the March sample-based employment estimates with UI-based population counts for March. The benchmark therefore determines the final employment levels ...

Using the preliminary benchmark estimate, this means that payroll employment in March 2012 was 386,000 higher than originally estimated. In February 2013, the payroll numbers will be revised up to reflect this estimate. The number is then "wedged back" to the previous revision (March 2011).

This means the BLS under counted payroll jobs by 386,000 as of March 2012. This?preliminary estimate showed?an additional 453,000 private sector jobs, but 67,000 fewer government jobs (as of March 2012).

For details on the benchmark revision process, see from the BLS: Benchmark Article and annual benchmark revision for the new preliminary estimate.

Book Review of Leapfrogging | Risk Management

?

When software developer Intuit debuted Quicken, it was intended to be used to manage home finances and balance personal checkbooks. The company was soon surprised to discover that small businesses were using it as well, despite the fact that the software was never designed to handle complex business accounting procedures. But rather than discourage these users or simply dismiss the trend, Intuit saw a market opportunity for small business accounting software and designed QuickBooks, which captured almost 70% of the market and became one of the company?s most profitable products.

The developers of OpenTable.com, the online restaurant reservation website, encountered their own surprise while starting out. They thought restaurants would jump at the chance to fill their seats using an online tool, but they quickly learned that most restaurants didn?t even have internet access, let alone digital reservation systems needed to link to the service. Rather than abandoning the idea, however, OpenTable saw an opportunity and got into the hardware business. The company installed new, computerized reservation systems for its clients and, in some cases, even made sure that the restaurants were wired for the web. OpenTable became successful because it went from a simple online-booking system to a ?customer relationship and service enhancement tool.?

Businesses typically view surprises as something to be avoided. The feeling is that surprise creates uncertainty, which implies a lack of control and a possible threat to success. But as Soren Kaplan details in Leapfrogging, looking at surprise as a purely negative event cause business leaders to miss valuable opportunities. In fact, surprises can often result in business-altering breakthroughs. As a result, organizations need to change their way of thinking about uncertainty if they want to open themselves up to the widest range of possibilities for success and ?leapfrog? the competition.

For strategic risk managers accustomed to thinking about both the upside and the downside of risk, this should be a familiar refrain. Because often in the bleakest of circumstances lies the greatest opportunity.

Curiosity drops a few rather big names in recent images taken with its MAHLI (Mars Hand Lens Imager) camera: here we see a plaque affixed to its surface bearing the names and signatures of U.S. President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Office of Science and Technology Director John Holdren, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and other key figures responsible for making the Mars Exploration Program possible.

You never know? even on another planet it can?t hurt to have friends in high places!
?
The image was captured by MAHLI on September 19, the 44th sol of the MSL mission. (See the original raw downlink?here.)

The rectangular plaque is made of anodized aluminum, measuring 3.94 inches (100 mm) high by 3.23 inches (82 mm) wide. It?s?attached to the front left side of Curiosity?s deck with four bolts. (Explore Curiosity in 3D?here.)

Dust, pebbles and variously-sized bits of Mars can be seen scattered around the plaque and deck, leftover detritus from the rover?s landing.

The complete list of signatures is:

Barack Obama, President, United States of America

Joe Biden, Vice President

John P. Holdren, Director, Office of Science and Technology Policy

Charles F. Bolden, Jr., Administrator, National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Edward J. Weiler, Associate Administrator, Science Mission Directorate (2008?2011)

James Green, Director, Planetary Sciences Division

Doug McCuistion, Director, Mars Exploration Program

Michael Meyer, Program Scientist, Mars Exploration Program

David Lavery, Program Executive, Mars Science Laboratory

In another image taken on the same sol, Curiosity shows some national pride with a circular medallion decorated with the stars and stripes of the American flag. The 68-mm-wide circular aluminum plate is affixed to one of the rover?s?rocker arms. It?s just?one of its four ?mobility logos? ? the others having the NASA logo, the JPL logo and the Curiosity mission logo.

The main purpose of Curiosity?s MAHLI camera is to acquire close-up, high-resolution views of rocks and soil at the rover?s Gale Crater field site. Developed for NASA by?Malin Space Science Systems?in San Diego, CA, the camera is capable of focusing on any target at distances of about 0.8 inch (2.1 centimeters) to infinity, providing versatility for other uses, such as views of the rover itself from different angles.

Young cancer survivors often forgo medical care due to costs

Monday, September 24, 2012

Many survivors of adolescent and young adult cancers avoid routine medical care because it's too expensive, despite the fact that most have health insurance. That is the conclusion of a new study published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. The results indicate that expanding insurance coverage for young cancer survivors may be insufficient to safeguard their long-term health without efforts to reduce their medical cost burdens.

Medical care in the years after a cancer diagnosis is particularly important for detecting any long-term health conditions associated with their cancer treatment; however, little is known about the extent of care that survivors of adolescent and young adult cancers receive in the years after their diagnosis and treatment.

To investigate, Anne Kirchhoff, PhD, MPH, of Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and her colleagues analyzed national survey responses from younger adults ages 20-39 years: 979 who were diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 15 to 34 years and were at least five years from diagnosis, compared with 67,216 controls who had no cancer history.

While adolescent and young adult cancer survivors had similar rates of being uninsured as those without cancer (21 percent versus 23 percent), survivors were 67 percent more likely to forgo routine medical care due to costs in the previous year. Cost barriers were particularly high for younger survivors aged 20 to 29 years (44 percent versus 16 percent of controls) and female survivors (35 percent versus 18 percent of controls). Survivors reporting poorer health also experienced more cost barriers.

"The Affordable Care Act is an important step to ensuring that adolescent and young adult cancer survivors have health insurance coverage and improving their health care access; however, they need to be educated about the importance of regular health care to monitor for late effects," said Dr. Kirchhoff. "Furthermore, even the insured survivors in our study reported unmet health care needs due to cost barriers, suggesting that adolescent and young adult cancer survivors need resource supports beyond health insurance."

This isn't "Fantasy Football for Dummies" though. If you have a top 8-10 player at a position you should probably play them every week, unless they're injured. After the jump dig into the facts and analyze my opinions on who to start or sit this week three in NFL Fantasy Football.

Note- Jaguar player-specific fantasy advice can be found here.

Star-divide

Start Em:

Tony Romo QB (vs. TB): After the rough game against the underrated Seattle defense you're probably feeling a little wary of starting Romo. Don't. Watching the Bucs/Giants fourth quarter should have eased any concerns that the Tampa secondary is nothing near Seattle's. TB is the worst defense in fantasy football verses receivers currently. They are also the 6th worst defense in points to opposing QBs giving up over 400 yards a game in the air. That means a big day for Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, possibly even Ogletree, and of course Mr. Romo. He may not put up 500+ yards, but I'd expect 300+ with multiple TDs.

Darren Sproles RB (vs. KC) - After ending week two with 13 catches and 14 targets I'm not even sure how you think about NOT starting Sproles this week! The Chiefs are currently 11th in points allowed to opposing RBs, but even better they're also 12th in points allowed in the passing game. Being that they're consistently average and the Saints will get the ball to Sproles in the open field you can bet he'll get the ball in the open field on multiple occasions. I can see multiple TDs or over 100 total yards this game for Sproles, if not both.

Torrey Smith WR (vs. NE): It seems that many managers are starting to worry about Smith after coming into this game with only four catches in the first two games, but we must remember he has always been a deep threat ala Juilo Jones 2.0. The Ravens haven't taken enough shots downfield but that may change against the Patriots. Needing to keep up with a team whose offense generally gives them fits should force Flacco and Co to open up the playbook. Although the Patriots have currently done an average job defensively, the Ravens' offense will be by far their toughest challenge yet. The Pats D has only seen Kevin Kolb and Jake Locker on defense as of yet. If you remember last season Smith caught 3 passes for 82 yards & a touchdown in last season's AFC Championship game against the Pats. I still expect him to give their secondary fits.

Dexter McCluster WR/RB (vs. NO): McCluster has been one of my favorite late round picks/waiver pickups of the season so far. Because of his role in the KC offense he's labeled as a WR and RB, so he can be played in the flex spot or any of the other two. Dwayne Bowe is still the main target getter but Dexter has been averaging about ten targets from the slot per game. The Saints are giving up the 7th most points to opposing WRs which is where his damage will be done. If you're in a PPR league and weighing tier two WRs/RBs play the man. Be aware that he's questionable for the game with a rib bruise but is expected to play. NOTE: Make sure to verify that he is indeed playing.

Brandon Pettigrew TE (vs. TENN): Pettigrew is currently the #2 target getter in this offense but has dropped a TD in each of the past two games. While he's sure to get that back on track, the fact remains that the guy is getting open and he's playing against a team that loves to allow TEs to get open. The Titans defense has been destroyed by tight ends this season, allowing five touchdowns and 26.60 fantasy points per game average to the TE position in just two games. Start him ASAP!

Detroit Lions D (vs. TENN): The Lions haven't posted huge fantasy numbers yet in the first two weeks, but now they get to tackle an offense that's having trouble moving the ball when they face the Titans. If the offensive line is truly the biggest problem in Tennessee, the talented front four of the Lions should tear them apart. The Titans are dead last with 11.5 points per game. Detroit has seven sacks already.

Sit Em:

Michael Vick QB (vs. ARZ): Avoiding the fact that Vick just loves to get injured and throw picks at the most inopportune times for our fantasy teams we still have to talk about the injuries of his WR group currently. Maclin looks like he will have to sit this week out. DeSean Jackson will likely be man to man all game with the Cardinals Patrick Peterson in a great matchup. The Cardinals defense is playing pretty well thus far after shutting down the Patriots offense last week. Despite throwing six interceptions in two games, Vick still has posted top-five fantasy numbers in most formats but if you saw the Cleveland game you'll also realize that the Browns dropped THREE ints combined on the two drives that Vick scored TDs. I don't expect Arizona to be that giving. Vick is on the road against a Cardinal defense that has put together back-to-back outstanding performances. If Philadelphia wins this game, it'll be on the legs of LeSean McCoy.

Jamaal Charles RB (vs. NO): He banged up his surgically repaired knee last week, and Kansas City subsequently benched him. They're likely to take it easy with him since they still have Peyton Hillis. I'd give Charles another week before I inserted him back in my lineup, though I know many of you will likely chance it simply due to the fact that the Saints' defense that is allowing an ungodly 186 rushing yards per game. Just know there's major risk involved and in the one game that Charles did put up solid numbers against Atlanta 90% of those yards came on two runs (a 46 yarder and 22 yarder). 68 of his 87 yards came on two of his 16 carries. Just giving you the facts. He may or may not be given the touches you want of him.

Michael Turner RB (vs. SD): Turner has looked horrendously slow/old recently. Yes, he scored a one yard TD last week (right before getting pulled over for a DUI). Turner has only rushed for 74 yards this season total while averaging 2.7 yards per carry. The Chargers D has been fortunate to play Chris Johnson and a zone running Oakland Raiders this season, so they have only given up 62 yards per game on the ground also. The only thing that can save Turner's game is a short TD, but I wouldn't bet on it. This isn't a good mix: Good run stopping D against slower diminishing RB. Look elsewhere.

Vincent Jackson WR (vs. DAL): Two words. Brandon Carr. Two more. Morris Claiborne. Yes I stated to start Jackson last week and he definitely came through but that was against a poor Giants secondary. The Cowboys play mainly man to man D and that doesn't bode well for Mr. Freeman or Jackson. Now due to the amount of targets he may get from Freeman there is a chance they could help him be relevant in this game but I'd rather risk it against the team that limited the Giants' tandem of Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz to 10 catches and 96 yards combined, compared to the 21 receptions, 378 yards and two touchdowns the two had last week against Tampa Bay. When Jackson played a tough passing D in Week 1, he was limited to four receptions for 47 yards which is what I would expect against the 4th best D for fantasy receiver points. No bueno.

Brian Hartline WR (vs. NYJ): Maybe he's worth using in PPR leagues, but I couldn't see starting him in standard leagues against the Jets now that Revis has been cleared to play...and you know who he'll be guarding right? Please don't follow the hype from last week. Revis = the Eraser.

Brent Celek TE (vs. ARZ): Yep. He caught eight passes for 157 yards last week against Baltimore. But let's not forget just how many ppl were contemplating if he should even be on their roster just last week. He's even leading the team in targets but don't think the Cardinals aren't ecstatic about Jeremy Maclin being ruled out and DeSean Jackson dealing with a hamstring injury. With WR Jeremy Maclin out, Celek will have much more attention on him and that spells back to fantasy irrelevance. If your QB is on the list to be sat, generally a WR and/or TE will also follow. (see Michael Vick explanation)

Seahawks D(vs. DAL): The Seahawks defense is definitely one of the best and they showed it last week by crushing a Cowboys team that looked extremely solid in Week 1. But there is no way you expect anything near that level when you're facing the Packers, an offense that simply put doesn't have two bad games in a row. Green Bay's Offense has given up the 19th most fantasy points to team defenses, sorta middle of the pack. But they've also played Chicago and San Fran, who's level the Seahawks are definitely not on. Try and find a one-week replacement for the Seahawks.

Buyers Beware:

Saints D (vs. KC): Kansas City is the 3rd ranked offense in turnovers and sacks allowed. The Saints can't stop the run, the main feature of the Chief's offense. Also, their defense has zero ints, 1 fumble recovery, and 2 sacks the two games combined against Washington and Carolina while averaging giving up 37.5 points per game. If you're starting them it's simply on name only or the hope that Matt Cassel is REALLY in a giving mood throwing picks right at defenders...speaking of Cassel...

Matt Cassel QB (vs. NO): Mainly due to his clutchness in garbage time Cassel is actually the No. 12 fatasy QB currently. He's averaging about 280 yards passing per game and has scored three passing and one rushing TD through the first two games (again, in garbage time). He's also thrown 3 INTs and fumbled twice in that span. The only reason he's even mentioned is because fantasy doesn't care about any of that. He's a better than middle of the pack QB playing against a terrible passing defense with a terrible rush. The Saints aren't just the worst defense in the NFL right now in both yards and points allowed; they also are giving up the second-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks. With Dwayne Bowe, McCluster (assuming he plays), and Baldwin in the mix I'm sure two of those three will have big days against this D.

Who's in your lineup this week Big Cat Country?

State policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will have maximum health benefits if coupled with policies to reduce near-roadway exposure, study says

LOS ANGELES Research conducted at the University of Southern California (USC) indicates that at least 8 percent of the more than 300,000 cases of childhood asthma in Los Angeles County can be attributed to traffic-related pollution at homes within 75 meters (a little less than 250 feet) of a busy roadway.

The study also indicates that previous estimates of childhood asthma exacerbation related to air pollution may have underestimated the true burden of exposure on society. The research was published online Sept. 24, 2012, in Environmental Health Perspectives and was conducted in collaboration with the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute and Sonoma Technology, Inc. The study focused on the Los Angeles basin.

"Our findings suggest that there are large and previously unappreciated public health consequences of air pollution in Los Angeles County and probably other metropolitan areas with large numbers of children living near major traffic corridors," said Rob McConnell, professor of preventive medicine, Keck School of Medicine of USC.

The USC study also looked at new state of California policies intended to cut back on vehicular greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. An important goal of these policies is to reduce vehicular emissions of greenhouse gases, both by improving fuel efficiency and reducing vehicle miles traveled by increasing use of public transportation. As part of these policies, housing developers would be offered incentives, such as speeding up environmental review to design projects located closer to transit stops with bus or rail service that will encourage use of fuel efficient mass transit. The investigators note, however, that transit stops are often located on or near busy roads and that there has been little study of the impact of these policies on exposure to children living near major roadways.

The study concludes that better information is needed to develop the optimal mix of policies that reduce sprawl, encourage walking and use of mass transit to reduce vehicle miles traveled, greenhouse gases and regional air pollution, and also to reduce children's near-roadway exposure to emissions from vehicles still traveling on roadways.

"Plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change offer an opportunity to develop 'win-win' strategies that will maximize the health benefits from reduction both of greenhouse gases and of air pollutants that directly harm children," McConnell said.

"There is also emerging evidence that other diseases may be caused or exacerbated by urban air pollution, including atherosclerosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and neurological disorders," McConnell added. "Thus, policies to combat climate change may have near-term health benefits beyond reducing the burden of disease due to asthma."

The researchers estimated the effects of air pollution on children suffering from asthma by using data from sources including the Children's Health Study, a long-term study of effects of air pollution ongoing since 1993. Regional air pollution measurements from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and area maps were used to estimate exposure to near-roadway pollution in the Los Angeles area. This information was linked to population data.

Asthma exacerbation in this study was connected to regional pollutants including nitrogen dioxide and ozone that cover large parts of the air basin, and to near-roadway pollutants that are responsible for the development of asthma. The researchers found that living near busy roads contributed disproportionately to the more serious exacerbations of asthma in children, including emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

In addition, a 20 percent reduction in children's near-roadway pollution exposure would result in an estimated 5,900 fewer cases of childhood asthma in the County, according to the research, whereas a 20 percent increase in exposure would result in 5,900 more cases of asthma.

Funding for the research was provided by funds from British Petroleum (BP) as part of an air quality violations settlement agreement with the South Coast Air Quality Management District, a California state agency. Double assault on tough types of leukemias

Friday, September 21, 2012

Investigators at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine have identified two promising therapies to treat patients with acute megakaryocytic leukemia (AMKL), a rare form of leukemia where the number of cases is expected to increase with the aging population.

The disease is characterized by an overload of white blood cells that remain forever young because they can't mature into specialized cells. Published in a recent issue of the journal Cell, the study found that the drug with the generic name alisertib (MLN8237), induced division and growth of healthy cells to overtake the proliferation or "blasts" of immature cells.

In the study, a mouse model with this leukemia that was treated with alisertib showed a striking reduction in the number of leukemia cells, including dramatic reductions in overwhelming white cell counts and the weights of their spleens and livers, which are indications of leukemia.

Alisertib has been tested before in humans with limited success to treat other types of leukemia and lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system. However, the drug should be effective against AKML in humans because it specifically targets the enzyme Aurora A kinase, said study senior author John Crispino, the Robert I. Lurie, MD, and Lora S. Lurie Professor of Hematology/Oncology at Feinberg. In normal cell development, this enzyme enables healthy cells to proliferate correctly, but with leukemia, is also allows adolescent cells to multiply unchecked if they are in the mix.

Crispino also is a member of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.

"Alisertib was really potent against the proliferation of cancer cells," Crispino said. "We were incredibly excited when we found that the drug we predict will reverse AMKL is already far along in clinical development. The fact that we don't have to start from scratch means we could be years closer to finding an effective therapy."

Crispino expects alisertib will be a more gentle cancer drug without the ravaging side effects of conventional chemotherapies. This is because the drug specifically targets a key enzyme, avoids healthy cells in the bone marrow and blood, and will probably be more effective at lower doses than drugs tested in previous studies.

"This study has given us a scientific rationale to take this drug to an early phase clinical trial in this very challenging form of leukemia," said Jessica Altman, M.D., assistant professor in hematology/oncology at Feinberg and an oncologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Altman also is a member of the Lurie Cancer Center. Together with other leukemia specialists, she is designing a multi-center clinical trial planned to open in 2013.

Investigators also identified another attack plan for other types of leukemias. Sifting through 9,000 chemical compounds during the study, they found that dimethylfasudil boosted the number of mature bone marrow cells and shot down malignant ones.

Dimethylfasudil could be useful against AMKL and tolerated better by patients, Crispino says. However, he adds that alisertib is moving forward now because there is urgent need and the drug is available. Meanwhile, Crispino's team and other scientists at Northwestern's Center for Molecular Innovation and Drug Discovery are developing the compound dimethylfasudil into an acceptable anticancer drug for clinical trials, which may take two to three years.

Investigators believe dimethylfasudil may be valuable to fight other types of leukemias because it has broad action against other enzymes that let cancer cells reproduce.
