UK big 4 banks agree to redress on rate protection

(AP) ? Britain's financial regulator says the country's four biggest banks have agreed to a settlement for mis-selling interest-rate protection products to small and medium-sized businesses.

The Financial Services Authority said Friday that Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group and Royal Bank of Scotland have all agreed to provide redress to victims of mis-selling.

The FSA says that some 28,000 interest rate protection products have been sold to businesses since 2001. It gave no estimate of how many customers would be entitled to redress, or how much it would cost the banks.

The FSA said the products range from simple caps that set an upper limit on the interest rate to more complex derivative products.

Syrian rebels: 170 regime tanks mass near major city

EDITOR'S NOTE: Image supplied by the opposition Shaam News Network.

Bodies of people allegedly killed by government forces in Douma, Syria, on Thursday.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

ANTAKYA, Turkey - Syrian helicopter gunships reportedly?bombarded a strategic town in northern Syria overnight and tanks moved close to the commercial hub and its largest city Aleppo, rebel fighters said on Friday.?

Meanwhile, anti-regime groups reported what one called a "hideous massacre" in Douma, outside of Damascus, and distributed a video and photograph purportedly showing the aftermath of a killing that left more than 50 dead, including women and children. ?Journalists do not operate freely in Syria so there was no way of confirming the report.?

A senior rebel officer said around 170 Syrian tanks had assembled at an infantry school near the village of Musalmieh northeast of the city of Aleppo, just 19 miles from the Turkish border but were keeping?well clear of new Turkish air?defenses?installed to curb Syrian action near its frontiers.

"They're either preparing to move to the border to counter the Turkish deployment or attack the rebellious (Syrian) towns and villages in and around the border zone north of Aleppo," General Mustafa al-Sheikh, head of the Higher Military Council, a grouping of senior officers who defected from Assad's forces,?told Reuters by telephone from the border.?

Turkey sends military convoys toward Syrian border

Omar Abdallah, an activist in Idlib coordinating with the Free Syrian Army said: "After taking hits in rural Aleppo and Idlib, the army is re-grouping ... There is speculation that these forces intend to ring Aleppo starting July 1."?

Turkish commanders inspected the missile batteries deployed on the border region on Thursday following Syria's shooting down of a Turkish warplane a week ago, which has sharply raised tensions between the two nations.?

Massacre?
Meantime, Syrians in the besieged city of Douma wrapped mangled and bloodied corpses in white burial shrouds early on Friday, according to video posted online.

Contains graphic images: Link to YouTube video, unverified by msnbc.com

"A massacre has been committed in the city of Douma, killing more than 50 in this bloody day, where Assad mafias and death squads launch aggressive attacks, bombardment of the city, and executions," U.S.-based anti-Assad Syrian Expatriates said a statement.?

A bomb targeting Syria's highest court has exploded in Damascus. NBC's Bill Neely reports.

Douma is predominantly Sunni community that has become as a focus of resistance to the Assad government.

The group gave details for the killings of 10 members of the same family, including four chidren, their mothers and grandmother. ?More than 200 were wounded, the group said.?

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 190 people, including 125 civilians, were killed on Thursday throughout the country.

The United States, Britain and France have said that Assad is responsible for the violence, which the United Nations estimates has killed at least 10,000 people, and is no longer fit to govern. Russia and China, however, reject what they describe as Western calls for "regime change."?

A strong explosion rocked the Syrian capital near a busy market and the Palace of Justice. Msnbc.com's Richard Lui reports.

Turkish deployments?
The Turkish deployments, a graphic warning to President Bashar al-Assad, coincide with rising violence across Syria and increasingly urgent international efforts to forge a peace deal as the nation slips into full-blown war.?

As the Turkish-Syrian dimension ratcheted up further pressure, peace envoy Kofi Annan said on Friday he was "optimistic" that crisis talks in Geneva on Saturday would produce an acceptable outcome, which has so far proved elusive.?

Turkey to help 'liberate the Syrians from dictatorship'

Regional analysts said that while neither Turkey nor its NATO allies appeared to have any appetite to enforce a formal no-fly zone over Syrian territory, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan had made it clear Assad would be risking what he called the 'wrath' of Turkey if its aircraft strayed close to its borders.?

Recently, there were clashes close to the border between Syrian forces and rebels. Last weekend, Damascus said "terrorists" infiltrating from Turkey were killed and there have been reports of Syrian forces shooting into camps for refugees in Turkey.?

Turkey, sheltering some 34,000 Syrian refugees and providing bases for the rebel Free Syria Army (FSA), is in the forefront of the efforts to bring down Assad.?

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told his newly appointed cabinet that a real "state of war" exists in the country and directed them to direct all its efforts toward vanquishing the uprising against him. ITV's Bill Neely reports.

Syrian tanks mass?
Rebel sources in Turkey's Hatay region said Assad's helicopters attacked Saraqeb, a strategic town deep in Idlib province, but kept away from the area directly along the Turkish border in the rural regions of Idlib and Aleppo provinces.?

Neither Turkey, which fears a local clash escalating into a regional sectarian conflagration, nor Syria, has any interest in a confrontation on their shared border.?

Ankara, which has the second biggest army in NATO, called an emergency NATO meeting after its warplane was shot down.?

Turkey has in the past talked about creating a humanitarian corridor on Syrian territory if refugee flows became dangerously unmanageable or the scale of killing in Syria became intolerable. But it had always said this would require international endorsement.?

"NATO just doesn't look like it's in the mood," David Hartwell, Middle East analyst, IHS Jane's, said. "What you might get is the Turks forcing a de facto no-fly zone."?

Erdogan announced earlier this week that he had issued new rules of engagement to his border troops and said any Syrian military elements approaching Turkish borders and deemed a threat would be treated as a target. But he failed, perhaps deliberately, to specify how close Syrian forces could come to the border before becoming vulnerable.?

"The Syrians might accept a very narrow zone along the border. Syria will remain very reluctant to get involved in any conflict with Turkey. They would be up against a very serious military foe," Malcolm Chalmers, research director at Britain's Royal United Services Institute, said.?

The world has been accused by Syrian opposition activists of inertia over the bloodshed. Diplomacy has failed to produce agreement between Western powers, backing the opposition, and Russia, which has used its U.N. veto to block Western and Sunni Arab moves to drive Assad from power.?

Reuters and msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton contributed to this report.

Family: Webcam spying led to gay student's death

(AP Photo/Mel Evans)

(AP) ? The family of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi said they have come to believe he killed himself in part because his roommate used a webcam to see him kissing another man.

"It was the humiliation that his roommates and his dorm-mates were watching him in a very intimate act. And that they were laughing behind his back," his mother, Jane Clementi said. "The last thing that Tyler looked at before he left the dorm room for the bridge (he jumped from) was the Twitter page, where (his roommate) was announcing Tyler's activities."

Jane Clementi, her husband and one of their surviving sons talked about Tyler's death and how their views on homosexuality have changed when they appeared Thursday night on NBC's "Rock Center" in the first interview the family has given since the bias intimidation trial of the 18-year-old's roommate.

The roommate, 20-year-old Dharun Ravi, was convicted in March of all 15 criminal charges he faced, including bias intimidation. Though a judge could have sent him to prison for up to 10 years, he sentenced him to 30 days in jail. Ravi spent 20 days behind bars after getting credit for good behavior and working.

The case attracted national attention after Clementi's suicide in September 2010, just days after the spying. With his death, Clementi became a symbol of the consequences of harsh treatment of young gays. Ravi, who apologized for his actions last month, was not charged with causing the death of Clementi, who jumped from the George Washington Bridge.

His parents, evangelical Christians, said their views on homosexuality have shifted since their son's death.

They say they went from struggling to accept that their son was gay when he came out to them just before starting at Rutgers to embracing that some people are gay.

"Sin needs to be taken out of homosexuality," said Tyler Clementi's father, Joe Clementi. "Our children need to understand ? and adults need to understand ? that they're not ... broken."

James Clementi, who is also gay, said he believes his brother may have been depressed but the webcam spying exacerbated his problems and contributed to his suicide.

Under scrutiny, Vatican bank opens its doors

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican bank, one of the most secretive institutions in the secrecy-obsessed Vatican, opened itself up to a little external scrutiny Thursday in a bid to show it's serious about fighting money-laundering and being more financially transparent.

During a nearly three-hour power-point presentation to a few dozen journalists, the bank's director, Paolo Cipriani, highlighted the peculiar nature of the Institute for Religious Works, the institute's official name, and stressed its internal and external financial controls.

But more importantly, he sought to refute media allegations that the institution has been less than cooperative with requests for financial information from banks such as JPMorgan and Italian authorities.

At one point, Cipriani displayed a letter from Italy's financial police thanking him for his "timely and exhaustive response" in signaling a suspect transaction to them even before the Vatican's new anti-money laundering law went into effect last year. And he described in detail the exhaustive checks carried out by the institute to ensure that the money that comes into and out of its accounts is clean.

The institute, known by its Italian acronym IOR, has long been the subject of rumor and scandal ? earned in part because of its role two decades ago in one of the most spectacular banking collapses in Italy, and ongoing suspicions by Italian investigators that it hasn't abided by anti-money laundering norms.

Cipriani, in fact, remains under investigation by Rome prosecutors for a 2010 suspect transaction. He hasn't been charged and said the transaction merely involved moving money from one IOR treasury account to another ? not a client transfer which requires more information be provided.

In his first ever news conference, Cipriani said that his aim in coming before reporters was to "remove the veil and shadow of the past and do the utmost to respect the needs of the Holy See."

However, TV cameras and recording devices were barred, and Cipriani didn't take spontaneous questions from reporters. Instead the Vatican spokesman selected some that had been previously submitted and posed them to Cipriani, an affable, fast-talking Italian who nevertheless seemed a bit overwhelmed by the whole encounter.

The visit comes on the eve of a crucial decision by a Council of Europe committee on whether the Vatican has complied with a host of anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing norms.

A good compliance grade will enhance the Vatican's chances of eventually getting on the so-called "white list" of countries that share financial information ? a keen aim of both the pope and Cipriani, since the bank has to deal with financial institutions that insist that its books are clean.

The Institute was founded in 1942 by Pope Pius XII to manage assets destined for religious or charitable works. Located in a squat stone tower just inside the Vatican City gates, it is not open to the public and isn't even a bank per se but rather an institution that provides financial services, such as bank transfers and financial advice, for church entities in 150 countries.

It has about 35,000 accounts belonging to religious congregations, dioceses, Holy See offices, diplomats and Vatican officials. Cipriani said it has about ?6 billion ($7.5 billion) in assets and makes conservative, ethically-minded investments, about five percent of which are in the stock market and the bulk in bonds.

It doesn't do any business with offshore banks, applies regular customer due diligence and internationally-approved bank transfer measures and has a fully functioning anti-money laundering system of checks, he said.

The IOR has been in the news lately because of the unprecedented ouster of its president, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, who was brought in specifically to help usher in a new era of transparency. The IOR's lay board of financiers removed Gotti Tedeschi last month, saying he was actually becoming an obstacle to transparency.

On Wednesday, the board met for the first time since the ouster and began deliberations on the selection of a new president.

Cipriani didn't mention Gotti Tedeschi's name or refer to the ouster. He did, however, respond to some other issues that have arisen in recent months, including the abrupt decision by JPMorgan to close its IOR account earlier this year.

Because the IOR isn't a traditional bank per se, it relies on commercial banks in Italy and elsewhere to carry out its transactions. Its 35-year relationship with JPMorgan came to an end when the U.S. bank asked for information about transactions beyond the scope of what the IOR was contractually required to provide.

Cipriani said the type of information JPMorgan was seeking involved "types of questions made by vigilance authorities" ? a reference to the Vatican's belief that Italian banking regulators were forcing JPMorgan to seek such information, even though it went beyond what is required.

The questions didn't concern an individual suspect transaction, but rather general questions about the IOR's policies about joint accounts, accounts with delegates and other matters, Cipriani said.

Cipriani displayed a letter in which he told JP Morgan to go through the Vatican's financial intelligence unit to get the information it wanted. Instead, JP Morgan "unilaterally" closed the account, he added.

JP Morgan has said it cannot comment. The Bank of Italy has refused repeated requests for comment about its decision to designate the IOR an offshore entity, a move that required banks in Italy to apply more scrupulous controls over their IOR transactions.

The IOR was implicated in a scandal over the collapse of the Banco Ambrosiano in the 1980s in one of Italy's largest fraud cases. Roberto Calvi, the head of Banco Ambrosiano, was found hanging from Blackfriars Bridge in London in 1982 in circumstances that remain mysterious.

Banco Ambrosiano collapsed following the disappearance of $1.3 billion in loans the bank had made to several dummy companies in Latin America. The Vatican had provided letters of credit for the loans.

While denying any wrongdoing, the Vatican bank agreed to pay $250 million to Ambrosiano's creditors.

Special Reference and Education Press: Getting The Right ...

So much of the education system is dependent on the age of your child, and they only have one chance to get ahead. As the old cliche goes, the sooner the better, and this is particularly true when it comes to your child's education. Do not blindly put your faith in the public school system.

Every child is unique, and if the normal schooling system is not working for your child, or you feel that it will not work, then there are other alternatives to look at that could prove to be more beneficial. From a private school to public school, parents have several options of which schooling to choose. They can:

- Use the public school system

- Teach the child themselves after school

- Hire someone to provide tutoring

- Enroll them in a private school

- Home school.

A child's education is basically their foundation to the future and what education is chosen impacts dramatically on life. The environment and style of teaching to which a child exposed is integral to their ability to learn. Many studies show that children's language development is affected not only by the quantity and quality of the language they hear from their parents and teachers, but also from their classmates. The effect of peer to peer learning is about the same as the effect that a child's parent's level of education has on their ability to communicate.

Classmates are an important learning resource for children. If a teacher can effectively manage their children's behavior, and create an environment in which children feel comfortable to converse amongst each other and learn language from one another than the teacher can collectively accelerate the children's language development. Their opportunity to do this is dependent on the school and the style of teaching. For example, using a Montessori school would give your child the chance to enhance free-thinking and creativity which is believed to increase productivity.

It is highly recommended that if you opt for the public school system, that you visit the school during a normal school day and take note of how the children interact with each other. Going alone once and with your child another time is something that many people have seen as a productive activity.

In many cases, after school tutoring, either by the parent or a tutor, can help a child enormously, but if the child is not learning at school then it is not addressing the real cause of the problem. Also it can be expensive, and the tutoring necessarily takes place after school, when children are tired and wanting to do something else.

While it's not a daunting task, home schooling takes a lot of time and effort. There is a vast supply of teaching materials available, especially on line, and it is possible that a support network or meet up group exists in your area.

For those who can afford, private schools may be the answer as they can offer different styles and types of teaching. For example, Montessori schools have a completely different style and philosophy to the public school system. Do a trial run and see how your child does in an alternative type of school for a day.

Ideally, the age when a child begins school is a good time to 'shop around' and look at all the education options available for your child, to minimalise any friction of having to take them out of school once they have settled in with their environment, schedule and friends.

----------------------------------------------------
The advantages of a Montessori education are well known in creating creativity, free thinking and productivity later in life. If you live in the Colorado area and are interested and want to know more , why not contact this Montessori school in Denver http://mchdenver.org/ and arrange a visit where you will be able to find out much more about this leading Denver Montessori school http://mchdenver.org/

A Kenly woman received her money back from a credit consulting firm after NBC-17 interceded on her behalf, but the controversy about the situation hasn?t subsided.

An employee of the firm says the charges made by Parrish are not true.

"We've done nothing wrong," claims Charlie Gilantzis of Barnes Consulting.

He denies the credit consulting firm he works for ignored Frank and Paula Parrish for the three months they were with the company.

"It was hard to understand what he said, and we wanted things in writing that we didn't get and there just wasn't a follow-up," said Frank Parrish.

Gilantzis, who has?served nine years on Kenly's town council, has an explanation.

"[It was] simply miscommunication," Gilantzis said. "It started with email. There was a late response and that's it."

After signing on with Barnes Consulting, Paula Parrish said her credit rating dropped lower when she followed Gilantzis's advice. As she and her husband became more frustrated, they wanted their money back.

"At that point, we just wanted to end this and move on because we're not getting what they promised us," Paula explained.

The firm's CEO sent a letter to the couple promising a refund but Paula says Gilantzis refused to honor the request at a Monday meeting.

"I got ready to leave and asked about my refund and he said, 'I'm sorry, there is none. I don?t have to give you a refund,'" Paula said.

She said Gilantzis told her he was aware of his boss's letter, and "told me to tear it up."

When NBC-17 put that charge to Gilantzis and asked if he told Paula to tear up that letter, he replied, "No sir."

Tuesday, the couple received their $500 back following NBC-17's report, which had a phone interview with company CEO Daryl Barnes promising a refund.

"There's always going to be someone that's unhappy," explained Gilantzis. "I've been in business 20 years and given people their money back many, many times."

In the end, the couple says they lost faith in Charlie Gilantzis, whom they've known for years.

"We trusted that he knew what he was doing," said Paula.

Happy Father's Day to best (and worst) TV dads!

By TODAY.com staff

Fox/ABC/AMC

Peter Griffin on "Family Guy," Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill) on "Modern Family" and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) on "Walking Dead."

The good, the bad and the downright terrible.?Just as in real life, the small screen has its share of nearly perfect fathers and fathers of the worst sort, and each TV season brings a new crop of them. So in honor of Father's Day, let's take a look at some new(er) and classic scripted papas who deserve a little recognition -- either for their great parenting or lack thereof.

THE GOOD ONES

Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), 'The Walking Dead'
Who?s a better dad than a gun-toting sheriff?s deputy who kills zombies to keep his wife and son safe? Certainly not that poseur Shane, who tried to fill Rick?s shoes in the bedroom and in the daddy department. He got what was coming to him in season two of the AMC series when things finally reached a breaking point with his best friend. And young Carl, Rick?s son, learned a valuable lesson about loyalty and leadership in the process. Some would argue that Rick and the gang of survivors might be better off some days if Carl had never recovered from his gunshot wound to the belly. Does that kid ever listen to his parents? At the same time, a timely death for Lori, Carl?s mom, might please viewers who don?t like the way she?s treated Rick. So Rick really is a great dad -- faced with a cheating wife and an annoying son, he?s still done everything he can to keep them from becoming zombie lunch. ? Kurt Schlosser

Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill), 'Modern Family'
?Modern Family?s? Jay Pritchett likes to pretend that all he needs is his bombshell Colombian wife, Gloria, and the memories of his high-school football career. Dig a little deeper, though, and the successful construction-supply owner is reveling in Spanish soap operas, dancing with granddaughter Lily at her dance recital and sharing life lessons with stepson Manny at the kitchen bar. While Jay pushes Manny to be the type of sporty stud he purports to have once been, it?s clear that Jay is really just a sentimental, loving father. Good luck convincing his kids Mitchell and Claire of that.?? Cody Delistraty

George Altman (Jeremy Sisto), 'Suburgatory'
Like many loving dads, super sweet George will always see his daughter as his little girl, no matter how smart and grown up and well adjusted she may be. The single dad -- although a tad overprotective -- ?always tries to do right by his teenage daughter, Tessa. Sure, he overreacts quite a bit (yanking her out of NYC and moving them to the suburbs after finding condoms -- not hers! -- in her bedroom, sending a neighbor to spy on her when he learns she's having a boy over while he's out), but his heart is always in the right place. And (very) slowly, he's learning to trust her and let her spread her wings.?? Anna Chan

Don Draper (Jon Hamm), 'Mad Men'
On the surface, Don's the coolest dad ever: He has a swank Manhattan pad and a hot young new wife. Of course, if you're his child, you might see these things as not very cool at all. And while Don is very much a product of his era -- distant, authoritative -- he's also clearly got a soft spot for his children, evidenced by the fact that he married his secretary after she proved she could handle them. Maybe not the most hands-on papa ever, but Don is a good one.?? Randee Dawn

Dan Connor (John Goodman), 'Rosanne'
Dan easily tops my TV-pop list. He's -- yeah, present tense (I'm pretending his series finale fate never happened) -- a hard-working, beer-drinking every-dad who sometimes loses his temper in a big way and spends a little too much time in the garage or parked in front of the TV. But more often than not, Dan fills the role of dependable family man (OK, just going to ignore that whole last season) and never leaves his kids in any?doubt of his love.?? Ree Hines

Cliff Huxtable (Bill Cosby), 'The Cosby Show'
No, the ?80s are not over, thank you. Not if they are the kind of decade that produces a dad like Dr. Heathcliff ?Combustible? Huxtable, who somehow managed to deliver babies, court his charming wife, sneak giant sandwiches and serve as the most loving and entertaining patriarch on TV. Living with Cliff as your dad was like living in one of Cosby?s famed stand-up routines (?Dad ... is ... GREAT! Give us ... CHOCOLATE CAKE!?) Maybe the best example came when son Theo thought he could move out, become a model and make big bucks, and Cliff organized the family to show him just how wrong he really was. Cliff played his landlord, Clair sold him back his own furniture, Denise charged him for leftovers and little Rudy played banker Mrs. Griswold, who torpedoed his chance at a loan. It was an entertaining and educational reality check from the best dad of the ?80s, and a dad who?d stack up nicely against any dad before or since. ?? Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Conrad Grayson (Henry Czerny), 'Revenge'
He might put a beautiful roof over your head, he might buy you nice cars or even pay for your townie boyfriend to attend your elite private school, but Conrad Grayson is not the guy you want to be calling dad. In the span of one season, Grayson disowned his son Daniel for not wanting to be part of his company (only to take him back, of course), turned his back on his daughter and had a hand in the deaths of at least three separate characters. And that?s just scratching the surface. It?s difficult to quantify general, day-to-day awfulness and spite. But if he were your dad, you?d better go big on the Father?s Day gift ? if you don?t keep him on your good side, odds are you?ll end up on the wrong side of the grass.??? Courtney Hazlett

Peter Griffin (voiced by Seth MacFarlane), 'Family Guy'
Selfish, childish and cruel, Peter is probably one of the worst dads to ever grace the television screen. At least Homer Simpson tries to do right by his kids every now and then (the saxophone he bought for Lisa and his love for baby Maggie, for example). But Peter? It's all about him and his wants, and poor teen daughter Meg is always the butt of his jokes. Reading your kid's diary for laughs? Not cool. Randomly shooting her when she says hello? Oh so wrong. Having to be paid to attend her 18th birthday celebration? Don't get us started.?? Anna Chan

Anthony Cooper (Kevin Tighe), 'Lost'
My all-time, bottom-of-the-barrel TV dad pick? John Locke's?kidney-nabbing father. Of course, conning Locke out of a spare organ wasn't even the worst of his deeds. He also left his son paralyzed after pushing him out of an eighth-story window, and the less said about what he did to Sawyer's parents, the better.?? Ree Hines

Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven), 'Entourage'?
It?s not just his former?assistant (later, agent)?Lloyd who took an emotional beating daily. Hyper-successful L.A. agent Ari Gold treated his wife and children to a barrage of misogynistic, crass comments that ?Entourage? tried to play off as ?good fun.? Sure, it may be funny when Ari's belittling Johnny Drama for his absolute lack of success or slinging previously unimaginable slurs at work, but missing birthdays, refusing to give his kids even a few genuine encouraging words, and that?s not to mention the phone call he takes in the series finale, well that?s not too fun. Even when he has the life so many men would envy --?spending a languid vacation with his super-hot wife in Florence, for example --?it seems Ari just can?t say no to work. It?s not to say he?s not somehow charming and likable (although it?s difficult to pinpoint exactly why), it?s just that a big smile and a ?Hug it out, b----? only work so many times. After that you?re just not a very good father. ? Cody Delistraty

Stocks rally, see their best week of 2012

Brendan Mcdermid / REUTERS

A trader works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

By msnbc.com news services

Updated at 5:30 p.m. ET: Stocks closed out their best week of the year with a modest rally?led by defensive shares Friday as investors traded cautiously ahead of the?weekend, when?Spain is expected to request aid for its troubled banks.

The Dow Jones industrial average finished the day with a gain of 93 points.

For the week, the Dow rose 3.6 percent, the Nasdaq composite climbed 4 percent and the S&P 500 gained 3.7 percent to chalk up its best weekly gain of 2012.

Much of the market?s rise this week came from?a big rally on Wednesday, when stocks scored their?strongest day of the year on amid signs that?Europe would move to help?Spain's troubled banks.

"What's driving the market here is the belief we're in the final innings of approaching some form of a solution to contain the Spanish problem," said Robbert Van Batenburg, head of equity research at Louis Capital in New York. "I don't buy it, but maybe there's this understanding out there."

Analysts said the market was ripe for a rebound after a drop of?more than 6 percent in May.

"Here is a real classic case of the market doing the opposite of what most people think," said Terry Morris, senior equity manager for National Penn Investors Trust Co.?

"The market is telling you that it was still oversold, but they don't want to play the high (volatility) names just in case something happens over the weekend."

European Union and German sources said eurozone finance ministers were to hold a conference call Saturday. Spain's expected request was an effort to stem the tide of worsening market turmoil.

Underscoring the impact of Europe's debt crisis, McDonald's reported a lower-than-expected rise in global same-store sales in May and warned austerity measures in Europe were taking a toll.

President Barack Obama said?European leaders face an "urgent need to act" to resolve the region's financial crisis as the threat of a renewed recession there spells dangers for an anemic U.S. recovery.

Chesapeake Energy plans to sell its pipeline and related assets to Global Infrastructure Partners in three separate transactions worth more than $4 billion, as the company scrambles to plug an estimated $10 billion funding shortfall.

Chesapeake?shareholders delivered a broad rebuke of the company's board, withholding support for two members up for re-election in the wake of a governance crisis and poor financial performance.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Fire at De Niro's NYC apartment, no injuries

(AP) ? A fire that broke out in Robert De Niro's Manhattan apartment has been extinguished.

A Fire Department spokesman said no residents were injured in the Friday afternoon fire on Central Park West. The fire was contained within an hour, and the cause was under investigation.

A spokesman for De Niro confirmed that the actor lives in the building. The spokesman, Stan Rosenfield, said De Niro is out of the country.

Residents of the building told The New York Times the fire started in the laundry room of De Niro's apartment. The newspaper also said 95-year-old actress Celeste Holm and her husband, Frank Basile, who live in the building, were in their apartment as firefighters fought to contain the flames.

Entrepreneur Skills Start With Leadership | Bonnie Chomica

entrepreneur skills

Whether you are new to the home business game, or a seasoned veteran, the most important entrepreneur skills you need to develop are those of a leader.

To be successful, you have to be seen as a leader. You have to show up as a leader.

I know what you?re thinking. I work in my home. I have no employees. Why do I need to be a leader?

People seek out leaders, that?s why. They like to listen to those in authority, take direction from someone they perceive as credible, and want to be associated with someone that is successful.

Develop yourself as a leader of people, and you will grow your business, but more importantly, you will personally grow.

To get you started, here are five things that leaders do every day.

1. Visualize

Picture yourself achieving the goals you have set for yourself. Can you see yourself driving a fancy, new car? Can you see your bank statement showing your six figure earnings? Can you see yourself travelling around the globe, whenever you want?

Be conscious of your goals to motivate you to reach your success. Whatever your dreams and goals are, stop and visualize what they look like, every day.

2.?Perform Revenue Generating Activities

Unless you are marketing your products and services, you won?t make any money. Pretty straight forward. You need to do something to drive traffic to your website or store front.

You can place ads, write articles or blogs, set up social media posts, talk to your customers, whatever it is, it is paramount that you do something daily.

3. Mastermind With Other Leaders

Surround yourself with like-minded people that are also leaders, positive thinkers, and success driven.

Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, first defined the mastermind as a ?coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose.?

Look to mentors, people you admire, people who have helped you, people you?d like to be like. Get on conference calls, webinars, and listen to successful people. Join in on conversations on blog comments, or on forums. Find an individual or group that you can chat with, and can make you accountable for your actions.

4. Develop Yourself

Personal Development should be an ongoing habit. Learn about business. Learn about yourself. Always be a student.

Every day, you need to take some time to either read books, listen to audio recordings, or attend live events. When people see how you approach your own self improvement, they will want to be a leader just like you.

5.?Cultivate the Expectation of Leadership

Believe you are the leader. Be the leader. Do what leaders do. There is no school, or graduation to achieving leadership. It?s an attitude and a way of life, personally and in business.

Show up as the leader and people will recognize you as one.

Entrepreneur Skills For Life

Being an entrepreneur is a way of life. It?s not a job.

You will find more fulfillment in learning and growing your entrepreneur skills, every day, for years to come.

Incorporate these five activities daily and you will rise as a leader, build your business organically, and be proud of how you grow personally.
